The Wave

Recording the views of people who cannot speak for themselves.

Many people who have a severe or profound learning disability never get the chance to get their views included in consultation sessions.
The normal 'Wave' session can work if each person has friends and advocates with them.

We have developed our own format that works well.

The facilitator brings a blank 'Wave' chart to the special needs unit or other venue where the usual day's routine takes place. The facilitator listens to staff talking through what works and doesn't work for any particular individual. This takes place while the people concerned are simply going through their regular activities and communicating in the ways that suit them best.

Family, friends, advocates, past teachers and other staff and any one else that knows the person well are invited to drop in for a coffee and a chat to share their stories about the person with the facilitator.

The facilitator records all the information in the usual way on the 'Wave' chart.

The 'Wave' is usually left at the venue for additions from anyone that knows the person (People) well. This is usually done for two weeks. The chart is then returned to the facilitator for inclusion in the main report.
